It should be noted for the sake of (pseudo)accuracy that the story here is attributed to Ferdinand Magellen (and in the pacific, Cook). There are other tales all pertaining to the same phenomena of 'non - perception' leading to 'perception' (via the means of a series of calculations applied to the negative space, differing water patterns, etc.)
Due to the ubiquitous nature of this tale in historical record (and the desire for ease of vocal delivery) Cortez seemed a suitable substitute and character for the story which really is an excellent metaphor for-
A) discussing consciousness and the ability to see/perceive within its bounds/limits.
and
B) The capacity to pierce the limitations of the 'known'/expected to discover the 'unknown'/new ( but actually existing and present). Which ties us neatly into the thrust of the song.
